I found myself this past Sunday morning making a little brunch for one. My being under the weather with a horrible cough hindered me from hanging out with the girls. I had to forego the bottomless mimosas so not to spread the wealth of my germs. They’ll thank me later.
Pancakes and eggs were on the menu. I heard Amy Winehouse’s song “Stronger Than Me” in the background as I poured the pancake batter in the bowl. Listening to the late songstress belt out “You should be stronger than me” and other lyrics it got me to thinking. There were many thoughts that crossed my mind. The thoughts dealing with the roles of man and woman stood out. I found myself disagreeing with those lyrics. Not entirely but just enough to inspire this post.
I DO believe that a man’s purpose includes being stronger than his chosen woman. I just believe that it does not stop there. There is so much more to it than that. I believe this is meant in the physical sense. The man is the protector. It makes perfect sense that he would be physically stronger than his woman so he is able to do his duty in protecting her.
There is another side to this coin and this is where my disagreement exists the most. I also believe that a woman’s purpose includes being stronger than her chosen man…when dealing in the mental sphere. Where compassion, empathy, and a nurturing heart will be needed in certain situations.
This is not to say that a woman cannot be physically able or that a man cannot have a strong mental capacity. On the contrary. You see, it’s a two way street. An equal stake. These are strengths that we both bring to the table and provide for one another at the times they are needed. When we as women reach our limit of physical strength our men step in. When our man’s analytical mind needs that compassionate boost we are there. With the proper communication we are the perfect compliment to each other. We can take over the world with this type of partnership.
Now I’m not sure if this is what Ms. Winehouse was singing about. This is just what came to mind when I heard it.
So tell me…what are your thoughts on this matter?
