I‘ve had kind of a fling since moving here to DC two years ago. It started off as mere curiosity. It eventually grew into a relationship of convenience. It was an on again, off again sort of thing. Definitely not needed. I already had an ongoing relationship going. I’m not talking about a man. I’m talking about the DC Metro system.
Since the demise of Lucille my fling with the Metro has blossomed into a full blown commitment. We have our frustrations…
The Metro not showing up on schedule. Stations I need to go to being closed. Service not available in areas I want to travel to on the weekends.
We also have our high points. The Metro does get me to the places I need to be. Without it I’ll be pretty much in the house with a serious case of cabin fever. Not pretty. I’m not kidding.
Our relationship isn’t very traditional. I’m the money bags and Metro gets a portion of said bags. Well, it has to. Otherwise, it’s not taking me anywhere. That wouldn’t be good. Cabin fever, remember? *shudders a bit*
Speaking of the Metro taking my money, I’m currently budgeting my monthly cost to cover my dancing. Currently that’s four times a week. In the past I’d do the bus/rail combo round trip. I’m being a bit smarter about it this time. You see, the bus/rail combo during the week is killer. I’d be traveling during peak times one way. Metro is more expensive during those times, especially on the rail. I’m opting for the bus the whole way. Sure, it adds 30 to 40 minutes to my travel time. I’m saving for my next trip!
This thing that I have with Metro is great. It really is. It won’t last long though at least not full time. I miss my relationship with my own wheels. I could come and go as I pleased. I wouldn’t have to adhere to a schedule. It will take me a fraction of the time to get to where I need to go. Sure I’ll have to deal with DMV traffic again (the Beltway…nuff said). It’s all good. That’s what I have my beats for.
So do any of you have a fling with the transit authority in your city? How is that going for you? Do you prefer your own wheels over it?
